Should I use a Ghost Writer for my Blog?

This was posted today on a Listserv I am on. I could not let it go without responding. I am not providing who stated this and won’t until such time as they might comment to this post.

“If you want to be seen/heard/read or increase your ranking in the search engines, content is king. If you’re in a competitive market, you need steady, frequent content. Ghostwriters/content providers fill the minor holes that you don’t have time to address.“

And let me reply. I have been blogging now for almost 3 years. I have started blogs and killed them. Some I have started to see what kind of SEO I can get and how quick. I have to report, I have yet not had one move up in Google quick.

Recently, I started a new project. While we are building it, I have been posting daily to the main blog the network is being built around. We are getting great results and it has only been up for a month. Last night I did some stat’s surfing and discovered that with some searches our readers are doing, we are showing up not only on the first page of Google, we are showing up in the top 5 most of the time.

Blogging takes a commitment. And if you want to blog, and if you want that blog to be successful, you have to make a commitment to make it happen.

Kevin O’Keefe and I have posted about this on our blogs. But, let me make just this one statement. I have always been a proponent of CONTENT. Not just content, but relevant content. However, I have neve said you can just throw up content and expect it to stick. That would be like throwing some crap on the wall and watching to see what sticks. It ain’t going to happen. And heres why.

Blogging is one of the best communication tools we have available today. It is one of the best ways to get involved in the conversation too. No where else can you so quickly become a part of a nationwide, worldwide conversation on a topic. But you have to get noticed. And you do that by becoming involved in the conversation. Post, link, trackback, comment, email bloggers, email commentors thanking them for commenting, allow comments and trackbacks.

But, how you say do I do this. First of all, you can’t even attempt to keep up with what is going on in the blog world if you aren’t using RSS and a good feeder. You have to find the conversations and you can best do that if you are being fed them.

Next, don’t try to be all to everyone and everything. Pick a niche and blog about it. Pick something you are excited about. Get involved in it. Set your RSS feeder to feed you information about that niche, topic or interest. Blog about it, comment about it and get involved in it.

YOU CAN‘T DO THAT IF YOU AREN‘T THE ONE POSTING ABOUT IT.

If you can’t think of something to blog about, ask a GUEST poster to do a post. Or in my case, I asked Allison Shields to do a series of post on billing. It was great and we BOTH had great traffic from it. We both had traffic for two reasons. It was a great series with some great content. And it was a hot topic at the time. We both knew that because we follow such topics in our RSS feeders and on Listservs.

Do a post about your competition. Post a comment to a competitor‘s blog. OMG, I cant do that. They might benefit from it. Yes, they will and best of all you will too. I call this my McDonald’s theory. Where is the best place to put a new fast food restaurant? Right next to a McDonald’s. They get traffic and you will too.

If you are not willing to make a commitment to make blogging work, don’t even start one. You will be disappointed and you will not become a believer. If you are willing to make the time commitment, work commitment and focus on the results, you will become a believer and you will actually enjoy it.

Lets keep the conversation going and lets get noticed.

Home Office Warrior Extends Blog Network For Lawyers Working From Home

The next network project we are working on is based on the success and fun I have had with the Home Office Lawyer. The network will be called Home Office Warrior (HOW). The main blog is under heavy construction as we speak and I am in the process of rounding up some great editors/bloggers for the blogs that will be part of the network. While HOW will not be focused only at the legal industry, the Home Office Lawyer blog will certainly be a big part of it. The HOW network will be a source for information about all things that concern the home office worker, home office business, home office warrior and the home office entrepreneur. My goal is to make it an “Internet Magazine for the Home Office Entrepreneur.” And it should be a lot of fun.

The network will be made up of connecting blogs covering everything from Home Office Financial Planning, Home Office Product Reviews, Home Office Technology, Home Office Technology Tutorials, Home Office Virtual Assistants, Home Office Health and Fitness, Home Office Blogging (Blog for Profit) and others.

Once we get further along in the construction process, design, layout and banner logo, I will post a link on the Home Office Lawyer for everyone to see. I also plan to post about the process of doing the HOW network as we progress with its birth. Right now we have a basic layout which we are doing from scratch. And so you know, we are building both networks on the WordPress blogging platform. And hosting it ourselves. So stay tuned for more details. I might even post an image of the Mindmap I am using on the project.

Why you ask am I telling you all this now. Because I need your help. I am looking for home office entrepreneurs, home office business and home office workers who have an interest in writing, who are interested in being a part of such a venture. Not a money part but a writing part. I am not looking for investors. So drop me a comment here or an email if you have an interest in being part of the Home Office Warrior, the Internet Magazine for the Home Office Entrepreneur.

Mobile MD

Thanks to the non Billable Hour for the heads up on this great Web site. Jay Parkinson + MD+ MPH runs a very non-typical medical practice. Not only are his fees different, he makes house calls and goes way beyond what is typical.

And he has a pretty darn good Blog too.

I do some of the same things Dr. Parkinson does in his medical practice in my law practice. But, you have to read about this guy. It is really amazing. It will be interesting to see if any more Doc’s take his business model and run with it.

Google PageRank Update In Progress – At Last!

For those of you who monitor your web site position, you will be pleased to know that sources are reporting that Google is in the midst of a PageRank update.

Some have kicked around the idea that PageRank was being scratched by Google, primarily because of the importance many text link brokers place on it. For those of us who generate blog income from services that sell link ads, PageRank plays an important part in spite of the fact that it’s an awful predictor of a site’s popularity. Still, ad broker services rely on these tools for assessing how much money to charge for advertising.

More important, however, is the credence that visitors give to PageRank. A visitor to a site with a PageRank of 3 will most likely give it less weight that one with a PageRank of 6. Remember, it isn’t how smart you are sometimes so much as the cut of your suit.

New Online Employer Identification Number Application Processes Requests in Minutes

Taxpayers can now request an Employer Identification Number (EIN) through a Web-based system that instantly processes requests and generates identification numbers in real time, the Internal Revenue Service announced this week. The new online application will reduce the time it takes taxpayers to get an EIN. Now you can get one in minutes without picking up the phone.

A taxpayer accesses the Internet EIN system through IRS.gov and enters the required information. If the information passes the automatic validity checks, the IRS issues a permanent EIN to the taxpayer. If the information does not pass the validity checks, it is rejected. The taxpayer then has an opportunity to correct the information and resubmit the application.

The Internet EIN application is interactive and asks questions tailored to the type of entity the taxpayer is establishing. This is similar to popular tax processing software packages on the market.

Followup to Full or Partial RSS Feeds

I did a follow up on Blawg for Profit to the post I did here concerning Full-Text RSS Feeds!!!!! It would appear that even Darren Rowse agrees. Full-Text is the way to go.

Britain is turning into a nation of homeworkers

Britain is turning into a nation of homeworkers. According to home insurance company, Zurich, purely office-based working is moving aside as the nation’s workforce embraces a more flexible working week.

New research has found that almost a third of full-time employees* surveyed (30 per cent) spend time during the month working from home, clocking up an average of 15.73 hours – nearly ten per cent of the working month – in the home office.

Avoiding the commute to and from work is the most popular reason for homeworking, with 66 per cent of respondents citing it as an advantage. Peace and quiet from colleagues (55 per cent), freedom to choose working hours (50 per cent), flexibility (48 per cent) and lack of distractions (46 per cent) complete the top five reasons for home working. Those surveyed also appreciate a few home comforts; one in five (22 per cent) welcome the chance for a lie-in, while nearly one in ten (eight per cent) tune into daytime TV during their working day.
