Recently there has been a great concept developed, the “legal unconference”. LexThink has done this for their great conference, BlawgThink.
Most recently, David Swanner of the South Carolina Trial Law Blog announced he was doing an unconference for the Southern Trial Lawyer’s Association.
Dave did some research and posted some of the results about “Designing a Better Conference”. Part of what he found is this:
•
Whoever comes is the right people.•
Whatever happens is the only thing that could have.•
Whenever it starts is the right time.•
When it is over, it is over.•
Finally we come to the One Law of Open Space. The Law of Two Feet. Every individual has two feet, and must be prepared to use them. Responsibility for a successful outcome in any Open Space Event resides with exactly one person — each participant. Individuals can make a difference and must make a difference.
Why am I telling you all this?
Wouldn’t it be great to have such an event for home office lawyers and/or Solo’s? Can you imagine the ideas we could come up with if we had such an unconference? And how much more fun would it be if we could have such an event instead of the normal stuffy sit on your butt and try to listen to the speakers for an hour at a time. Can you imagine taking part in such an event where you could pick the topic. Be in an unconference where you could live blog the event because the event staff would have the common sense to make sure you had hotspots through out the event.
So, if there is interest in such an event, let me know with your comments to this post. And post ideas of what you would like to see discussed in an unconference. Where those attending would actually participate and not just sit on their collective butts.
