Are we too Connected?

Kevin O’Keefe of LexBlog had a great post today called Digital cabin fever : Mark Cuban explains. Mark’s post Connected vs. Disconnected Entertainment caused me to think about my own practice and what this connected vs. disconnected concept means.

Mark talks about how connected he is. In reviewing my own day, I discovered I am just as well connected or might I say, tied down.

• I’m typing this post on a wireless internet connected iBook, where I can check email as often as I think I need to.

• I have iChat open on my iBook so I can stay connected with friends, fellow attorneys, clients and my son that is away this summer.

• Sitting beside my iBook is my Treo 650 which has the ability to check email and IM’s.

I am so connected I can access my life from anywhere I happen to be. But what does all this mean? I sometimes think we have created a monster. We have built into our lives now the problem that all of those people we deal with everyday expect instead results, response and assistance.

Can we truly get away from it? We have to!!!! There comes a time during the day or week when we have to turn off all those damn connected technology we use every waking moment of every day. Shut them off at a set time every night and leave them off until the next morning. Take an entire weekend and put the Treo 650 in the drawer with the phone shut off. Leave the laptop in its form fitting bag and don’t get it out until Monday morning. We have voicemail to answer our phone and those emails will wait until the next morning or even Monday. We deserve a weekend without being so connected with our work, that we can’t get connected with our family and friends.
