When I was a kid, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, the first two pandas in a U.S. zoo, were presented as a gift to the United States in 1972 by the Chinese government. My parents got two little plastic panda dolls that my mom kept by her bedside table, and I always played with them.
Though adorable, I knew pandas weren’t friendly and cuddly creatures. They are, after all, bears.
