Hi there - thanks for coming back to visit! While you're here, why not sign up for the Legal Practice Pro Newsletter?
My good friend Jonathan G. Stein has a great post over at his blog The Practice called Coffee and the Potential Client.
You laugh at us home office lawyers. How do we work out of our homes? Don’t we need an office? Why do we work at home?Well, we now have another advantage: Starbucks! Yes, the green coffee place. How? New research has shown that people who drink caffeine are more likely to agree to buy what you are selling. In this case, that means they are more likely to hire you. So, when we meet with clients are Starbucks or Peets or the local coffee joint and we buy the potential client a coffee, not only do we look good for buying the coffee, but we are putting them in a position where they are more likely to hire us!
Now, back to your chuckling, but if you work in an office, make sure you have coffee around, and not just the decaf!
One of my favorite places to get with clients and just do some work is at a local shop. It is great to get out of the office and just smell the freshly brewed coffee. I take out the iBook, get on the shops wifi and do some work. Just another way to be a “Connected Lawyer.”

Grant – do you also see any benefit in keeping some of your more emotionally-charged clients from knowing where you live? Is there ever a safety component to meeting you clients away from the home?

I rarely if ever meet clients at my house. Usually the only time I do, and this is because I live in a small town, is when I know the person very, very well.
Funny – I just bought YP advertisement at my soon-to-be opened law office while meeting with the representative at the local Starbucks. Hmm….
