I would love your comments on this idea. They are trying it at Chris Scott’s firm. I use email to exchange documents and information with clients almost daily. Just never thought about using it to send out bills.
Emailing bills to clients: ”
We have a major client who just agreed to let us email our bills. This is a longtime, good, loyal client, and this simple change has helped us trim about seven days off our collections cycle.

I’ve done this since I opened my practice. Clients love it. I think they see lawyers who mail anything, instead of using email, as not ‘with it’. I’m a tech lawyer, so that impression matters.
Although written communications with my clients are almost exclusively by e-mail, I send my bills by mail. I think the hard copy gets my clients' attention.
However, if my clients request a copy of a bill I have previously sent, they usually want me to fax or e-mail it to them, and I am happy to oblige.
Although I could potentially speed up the payment cycle by e-mailing all of my bills in .pdf format, I think that clients who want to pay towards the end of the billing cycle (I bill monthly) would simply wait until they are ready to pay.
We have been emailing invoices to some of our clients for a year or more now. They seem to appreciate it or, at worst, not notice a difference but pay 5-7 days quicker.
