Carolyn Elefant of myShingle.com had a post today called, “Have We Reached the Solo Practice Tipping Point”. Now, I am assuming that most if not all of you who visit this blog know of Carolyn. If you don’t, get to know her through her blog. From the very beginning of my blogging experience, Carolyn was one of the biggest influences on me. I do believe her blog was the first one that I read everyday, and this was before I was even using RSS feeds with my newsreader.
Carolyn reminds us in the link above about the proliferation of solo and small firm blogs. But, if I can take the liberty, in my humble opinion, it has almost always been the solo or small firm that has taken the lead in a lot of the advances we have in this profession. After all, we as solos and small firms don’t have the “red tape” that biglaw has. We, because we are the firm, can take an idea and run with it. We don’t have to answer to a group of partners or oversight committees.
We are not afraid to share our ideas with other solos or small firms. “You don’t see many biglaw bloggers dispensing advice on how associates can succeed at big firm practice.” As Carolyn states, “look at how many independent solos are dishing out advice on starting a firm, not because it will help us gain clients or referrals in our “real” jobs but in the hopes of helping others discover what will soon no longer be the legal profession’s best kept career secret.”
Great post, I strongly urge you to read the entire post at the link above.
