There are a lot of books out there about marketing, management and technology. Some of it’s awesome, but a lot of it is pure drivel. So many people have asked me which ones I like that I decided to let you know what’s on my bookshelf.
General Business Books
These books will challenge the way you think about the world of business in general, and give you an insight into the way commerce, business and human emotions work. Without a solid understanding of business, there’s no way you’ll ever be able to gain a clear picture of why and how your practice works.
Marketing
One of the problems with the whole legal marketing guru crowd is that they all drink from the same fountain. They look at other lawyers for their cues, attempting to refine what they already see. The better move is to look at the outside world to learn what works for businesses large and small, then to take what you learn and apply it to your firm. That’s what I did, and it’s worked really well for me.
You will notice that there’s a lot of Seth Godin represented here. There’s a reason for it – the guy is brilliant and questions every stupid rule we confront. He challenges us to ask bigger questions, and to demand better answers. Avoid him at your own peril.
Advertising And Copywriting
You can have the best ideas, but if you can’t communicate them in a way that makes sense to your potential clients then you’re sunk. Fortunately, some of the best and brightest advertising and copywriting folks have poured their knowledge onto paper.
