Carolyn and I are having a discussion about it over at My Shingle. We are both trying to make a point. While we all may provide links to other bloggers’ work, CONTENT is what really matters.
Sometimes we attorneys take ourselves way to serious. The word blawg for example. (That is another conversation we should have). But don’t take yourself so serious that you think you are above linkbaiting. As Carolyn points out, our readers deserve the best content we can provide. Content is what attracts our readers, keeps our readers and causes other bloggers to link to us. It should never be because we baited them with slick tricks or bait. Do we linkbait? Well if posting good content and linking to other bloggers’ good content is linkbaiting, than we are guilty. And if we provide good content in the process, like Carolyn has always done, there is nothing wrong with it. Linking to other bloggers is one of the great benefits of blogging. It is also what drives search engines crazy and why blogs will show up higher in a Google search than a static website. And isn’t this what we want, especially in a marketing blog we are using to promote our practice
I have read a lot about Linkbaiting lately on some of the “professional” blogging blogs and have seen what they have to say. What is really troubling is the way those slick tricks and baiting are supported. Even above good content.
Post your comments on Carolyn’s post called Is Grant Griffiths Linkbaiting. It would be fun to see what other lawyers think about this subject.
