The Connected Lawyer – Mobile Computing

The Futurelawyer has a post this morning called, “RV Heaven – Windows user has feet firmly planted on ground”. While FL takes a bit of a jab at me for my recent postings from the quite confines of a hot air balloon, he makes a very good point. Whether you are a windoze user, or a Mac using attorney, we are no longer confined to the four walls of our offices. The FL and I do pick on each other concerning computers and operating systems. But, the point both of us are trying to make is to take advantage of technology. We can stay in contact while on vacation with the family in a new “Land Yacht” or from anywhere we want.

And best of all, if done right, our clients don’t even know we are not in the office. Recently I was visiting with a court administrator in one of the counties I practice in. I asked her why the heck we don’t have wireless access in the courthouse. She look dazed and said, good question. We will be getting it. Technology has enabled us to both better serve our clients and at the same time free us to do those things we want to do with our families. Too many times I have seen other attorneys put off that family vacation because of nothing more than fear. Fear of not being able to stay in contact with clients. If you are not taking advantage of the technology available to ALL of us, why not. Get in the 21st century, buy a laptop computer and/or a smart phone and get connected.
